Freedom’s Journal


Did you know? Freedom’s Journal was the first African American owned and operated newspaper in America. Founded in New York in 1827 by Rev. Peter Williams, Jr. along with several other freed black men. “Freedom’s Journal denounced slavery and advocated for black people’s political rights, the right to vote, and spoke out against lynchings. The paper sought to improve conditions for the over 300,000 newly freed black men and women living in the North.”To find out more about the Freedom’s Journal click here
